Leicester City’s Greatest Underdog Story
Leicester’s Premier League triumph in 2014-15 season will
always be remember as the greatest underdog story in world football. After a great escape in a season prior foxes
under the guidance of Italian maestro Claudio Ranieri did the unthinkable after
winning Premier League title for the first time in clubs’ rich history.
At the beginning of the season, Leicester had 5000-1 odds of
winning the league suggesting they would probably be relegated to TheChampionship (2nd tier of English football). When the season began, Leicester
City players performed like they had a point to prove especially the English
talesman Jamie Vardy who spent most of his career playing for lower tier teams
& Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez. These two proved to be Leicester’s main men
going forward. After first 6 games, Leicester was unbeaten and sat at 3rd
in the league table.
Foxes were flying high when they received their first setback came down crashing after 5-2 thumping by Arsenal at home. After this defeat, Leicester went on a 10-game unbeaten run, which saw them go on the top of the table by Christmas. Leicester City never looked back after topping the tables on New Year’s Day.
Big wins against 3 of “big six teams” helped them to keep their momentum going and people started to believe in the impossible. Vardy scored most of Leicester’ goals while Mahrez created those goals for the Englishman. Leicester City were on a roll and lost only one more game in the entire season, comfortably winning the league by 10 points lead.
In an era dominated by clubs with big bucks
had left no room for fairytales, Leicester City wrote one, rising from the
ashes as nobody could imagine.
“Leicester
City! Leicester City are champions of England and the world is left to wonder,
wide-eyed, thrilled, bemused, ‘How on earth did that happen?’.” -Peter Drury on Leicester’s PL
triumph.
