The fall of ESL

The European Super League has officially reached a terminal ending finally after abrupting the footballing pyramid all across Europe, with all 12 initial participants pulling out of any further participation in the venture.

JP Morgan charged in with a staggering investment of $3.5 billion in order to finance the league and it’s requirements, attracting attention from 6 teams from the English Premier League, Serie A and La Liga. Big names such as Man Utd, Man City, Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool being some of the primary 12 to sign up for the competition.

The ESL was a direct threat to the most prestigious club football tournament in current circumstances, and since the last 28 years – the Uefa Champions League. The motive to join was a wider and tougher competition but also with the founding clubs receiving a big reward for their participation in the form of $425 million to each club.

Neither players, nor managers and most importantly no fan took this well and led to vast unrest and rioting, with eventually fans flooding into the stadium and stopping their teams from participating in their league matches even. The owners and board of directors of all clubs were under extreme scrutiny and forced to withdraw or lose their fan base.

Eventually the power of the fans won the war and all clubs who joined eventually withdrew from the competition with many amongst the administration forced to resign and plenty of owners looking to selling their share of ownership. It’s football, a game created by the poor and is so sacred and joint into everybody’s lives – that one can’t possibly fathom the magnitude and strength of the attachment unless you’re a fan of the sport yourself.
