ENGLAND WON THE WROLD CUP AFTER SUPER OVER DRAMA
Match between the two finalist teams was played in Home of Cricket ‘LORDS’. Thousands of spectators were watching live and millions of them on TV. Match started by New Zealand winning the toss and opting to bat first. They posted a decent score of 241 while batting first under pressure. England’s top order tumbled in the start but Stokes batted well throughout the innings.
The drama started in the final over when England needing 15 to win from the final over, two wickets still in hand. After two dot balls, Stokes hit a six into the stands at deep mid-wicket, bringing their score to 233/8. Then on the next ball stokes hit the shot towards the mid-wicket boundary and ran hard for 2 runs Guptill was the fielder chasing he threw the ball towards the keepers end that throw was well directed towards the stumps but, Stokes' dive came in the way. And ball, after hitting Stokes, deflected away towards the boundary where Grandhomme gave a run of his life to stop the ball. He tried his best but the ball was fast enough to win the race. It was 6 runs for England, the most bizarre six of the tournament. With 3 needed off 2, nobody moved a bit. Nobody could breathe properly. Nobody dared to look away. The two teams were tied on 241 runs at the end of the match, resulting in a Super Over being played to break the tie.In the super over both teams again scored 15 runs each. On the last ball New Zealand needed 2 to win but Guptill didnt made it. The NZ players were down. Guptill knew he hadn’t made it. Astonishment for the NZ fans. Buttler had pulled off a run out which every England fan would remember for the rest of their lives. SUPER OVER ALSO TIED. Guptill was heartbroken and so were the NZ fans. Celebration started for the English players.
England won the match on the basis of boundary count (26–17). For four years, in order to prepare for the world cup, teams worked on multidimensional skills of batting, bowling and fielding. And at the end, it was an accidental overthrow and the number of boundries which went on to become the deciding factor. Agony for Black caps and Ecstasy for Englishmen.
